Getting to Know Kathy

Potty Talk with Kathy.

I am on a mission. As a Pelvic Health Physical Therapist, my mission is to teach people about their bodies and to empower them to heal completely. I started Happy Body PT so that I could give the attention that every client deserves, without interruption, in a space that allows me to focus completely on you. The exact type of treatment I wanted when I was the patient.

You see, my road to becoming a pelvic health specialist began with my own problems. Yep. I was the patient. My first pregnancy was smooth, but the delivery was long and resulted in a 4th degree tear (that is a tear all the way from the vaginal wall into the anus). Ouch! Not only painful, but also resulted in both fecal and urinary incontinence, scar tissue, and pelvic floor weakness. I was lost. Completely disconnected from my body and struggling to feel whole and take care of my newborn. I was told by my doctor that I was fine and all my complaints were normal and I would heal on my own given time. But I didn’t. I needed (and deserved) skilled treatment.

At the time I was a PT working in sports and ortho, so I knew that pelvic health PT existed but didn’t know where to find it (this was in 2004 and few people knew the specialty existed). The closest pelvic PT in my area was nearly 1 hour away. So I loaded up my car with my baby and made the drive. The process of getting there and back was exhausting, but the treatments were worth all the effort. I was blown away at all the new information, manual techniques and help I received. I couldn’t believe that even as a physical therapist myself, I was learning so much. And getting better with each session.

That’s when I decided that I had to learn these skills to help other women (and men) who lived closer to me. So in 2005 I began the very first Pelvic Health PT Program in Park City, Utah. It became obvious that this was my passion and I could truly change lives with this specialty. That motivation to learn and help others is still strong and I have completed over 20 courses for this specialty. Even with 17 years experience in Pelvic Health, I continue to learn something new every. single. day. I remain passionate and devoted to helping all my clients and in return it simply makes me “happy” to help others, hence my business name “Happy Body PT”.

So, I’ve been the patient on the table. Uncertain. In pain. Self-conscious. Needing help. I understand the hesitation to seek help for your most intimate issues. Being the patient gave me insight into the nuances of creating a comfortable environment, listening, and sensitivity for such personal issues. My approach is a blend of compassion and professionalism (and some injections of humor too!). With the skilled treatment of a Pelvic Health PT, I healed and was able to find my “Happy Body” again, and now I’m on a mission to help you find yours.
